Wilson County Public Library Online Programs Planned for Oct. 2020

Join Wilson County Public Library online in October for fun, spooky, and crafty programs for all ages.  All programs will be accessible via the library’s Facebook and YouTube channels, unless otherwise specified. Seasonal and Halloween programs include an online costume contest for teens, and craft activities to pick up at library branches.

Registration is not required unless stated for specific programs listed below.

The main library is located at 249 Nash Street W, Wilson, North Carolina.

Hours: Monday-Tuesday 10am-7pm; and Wednesday-Saturday 10am-6pm.

Activities for ages 5 and up. Activity packets will be available for pick-up at the Circulation Desk on the Monday before each program, while supplies last.

Teen Reading Scare-a-Thon

October 1-31, 2020

Ages 12-19, read as many scary books as you can from our spooky horror/thriller reading list for a chance to win a prize. Think you’re NOT afraid of the dark? You may be after reading these books!  The reading list will be posted on the library’s website and Facebook. Registration is required; contact kbrittain@wilson-co.com to register.

Teen Advisory Board

Thursday, October 15, 2020 @ 4pm

For ages 13-18, and registration is required. The Wilson County Public Library Teen Advisory Board (TAB) gives teens the opportunity to share ideas and plan programs and services offered to their peers by the library. Members of TAB attend monthly meetings and assist in at least one teen program each school year. Virtual Trick-or-Treat

Thursday, October 29, 2020 @ 3pm

For ages 12-19. Submit a picture of your best Halloween costume via the library’s Facebook page for a chance to win a prize. The more creative the better!  Photos must comply with the library’s Customer Conduct Policy to be approved for posting.

TGIF: Teen Book of the Week

Fridays @ 11am

TGIF is a weekly book review show featuring our Teen Librarian, Kate Brittain. Kate reviews and recommends books for readers of Young Adult literature, and provides background information on each book. Tune in to our Facebook or YouTube pages every Friday at 11:00am for a brand new episode!

Ice House Entrepreneurship Program

Begins Monday, October 5, 2020

The Ice House Entrepreneurship Program is designed to inspire and engage participants in the fundamental aspects of an entrepreneurial mindset as an essential life skill. The program draws upon eight fundamental concepts of entrepreneurial thought and process derived from the companion text, Who Owns the Ice House? Eight Life Lessons from an Unlikely Entrepreneur. Each lesson contains video case studies featuring a variety of real-world “unlikely” entrepreneurs who have overcome challenges by embracing the core concepts of an entrepreneurial mindset. The program also provides for experiential learning through the process of identifying problems, finding solutions, and making connections beyond the classroom.

Recycled Book Wreath Craft

Saturday, October 17, 2020 @ 11am

For ages 16 and up, and registration is required. Add beautifully bookish décor to your home when you make a wreath from recycled books!  Registration is required as supplies are limited. Haunted NC Stories

Monday, October 26, 2020 @ 7pm

Celebrate Halloween through learning about our state’s ghostly past. Local History and Genealogy Librarian Tammy Medlin will tell tales of pirates, headless specters, haunted gold mines and more!

Pipe Cleaner Pumpkins

Ages 6-10.  Participants will create pipe cleaner pumpkins from beads. Grab-and-go kits will be available for pick-up on a first come, first served basis while supplies last.

Bat Bags Scavenger Hunt

Tuesday, October 20 and Wednesday, October 21, 2020 @ 10am-5:30pm

Ages 6-10.  Participants will make a bat for Halloween and go on a scavenger hunt outside to find items that bats might eat. Grab-and-go kits will be available for pick-up on a first come, first served basis while supplies last.

Day of the Dead Symbols & Traditions

Beginning October 1, 2020 @ 10am-5pm (while supplies last)

During October, explore traditions of Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebration which includes remembering and honoring family members who have died.  Our versions of the sugar skull — calavera — will be a tissue paper decoration for children and a luminary for teens.  Pick up a craft packet to take home while supplies last.

For ages 5-12.  Participants will make a variety of monster figures from popsicle sticks, wiggly eyes, and other bedazzled jewels.  Grab-and-go kits will be available for pick-up on a first come, first served basis while supplies last.

Perky Pumpkin Stix

Monday, October 26 and Thursday October 29, 2020 @ noon-5pm

For ages 5-12.  Participants will create their own unique version of Halloween Pumpkins.  All needed supplies will be provided.  Grab-and-go kits will be available for pick-up on a first come, first served basis while supplies last.
