Adult Programs

Braswell Memorial Library’s adult programs include reading, social networking, crafts, and much more. For information or registration (when required) for adult programs, call Kesha Joyner at 252.442.1951 x.253.

  • Building an Online Community (June 22, 2017 @ 1-3pm)
    Bring your smartphones and tablets and learn about social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat at the Whitakers Public Library.
  • Good Reads Book Club (June 26, 2017 @ 10:30am-noon)
    This month the Book Club is discussing the book “Dimestore: A Writer’s Life” by Lee Smith in the Wiley Room. Call if interested in becoming a member of the Book Club.
  • “Just Crafting Around” Craft Program (June 29, 2017 @ 11am-1pm)
    Local crafters are invited to come and discuss and demonstrate how to make their favorite crafts. Participants are responsible for bringing their own supplies: yarn, paints, fabrics, etc.

Teen Programs

  • Teen Movie Night (June 7, 2017 @ 5:30-7:30pm)
    Teens, come and watch a movie in the Computer Lab at Braswell.
  • Teen Minecraft Club (Thursday, June 8, 2017 @ 5:30-7:30pm)
    Work with other teens to design and create in the world of Minecraft. Held in the Computer Lab.
  • Teen Advisory Board-TAB (Wednesday, June 14, 2017 @ 5-7pm)
    Meet with other teens in the library’s Teen Area to help shape Braswell’s Teen programming!
  • Teen Game Night (Thursday, June 22, 2017 @ 5:30-7:30pm)
    A variety of games will be available for play with friends or family. Held in the Teen Area.

Summer Reading

With support from PNC, the library’s 2017 Summer Reading theme is  “Build a Better World”. The Summer Reading Program has different participation categories:

  • Read-To-Me Group
    Parents, caregivers or older siblings read to this group. Children choose a prize book after they have had thirty (30) books read to them.
  • Elementary Reader Group
    These children read alone and when they have read fifteen (15) books they may choose a prize book.
  • Young Adult Group
    Young Adults read either young adult level books or adult books. When they have read seven (7) books they are entered into a drawing for grand prizes.
  • Adult Group
    Adults who turn in completed Reading Record Sheets will receive a small prize weekly and will be entered into a drawing for grand prizes on July 31
  • Genealogy/History Group
    Adults who turn in completed Reading Record Sheets will be entered into a drawing for grand prizes on July 31.

The Summer Reading program ends July 29, 2017.

Genealogy-related Events

Several events geared toward family history are offered in conjunction with the library’s Summer Reading Program. Location, whether main library or branch library, is noted for each event.

  • Beginning Genealogy (Tuesday, June 27, 2017 @ 1-3pm)
    Held at the Whitakers Public Library, 106 W Pippen Street, Whitakers NC, come to this program and learn how to start finding family history.
  • Irish Genealogy (Tuesday, July 11, 2017 @ 2-4:30pm)
    Learn how to research Irish ancestors. Held in the Warner Room at Braswell. Schedule runs 2-3pm, with a 30 minute break, and then continues 3:30-4:30pm.
  • Beginning Genealogy (Tuesday, July 25, 2017 @ 1-3pm)
    Held at the Wesley Privette Memorial Library, 6280 Main Street, Bailey NC, come to this program and learn how to start finding family history.
