Braswell Memorial Library in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, hosts several club which meet monthly. Come and find out what they are all about.

All three clubs are free and open to the public, and there is no fee for meetings.

The Cookbook Club is open to adults. During their meetings, each member reads a cookbook — usually focused on a monthly theme — and then prepares a recipe from that book to share. Then, the group has a potluck lunch over which they discuss books, authors, and the ease in using the recipe. Their November meeting is November 7, 2016, and the theme will be foreign recipes.

The Photo Club is open to all ages and skill level photographers.  Attendees may bring their cameras and photos to meetings held on the fourth Saturday of the month. Note the club will next meet January 28, 2017.  However, in December, the club will be hosting a “Shoot The Stars” photo contest, which will go hand-in-hand with Braswell’s “Discover Space” program. Entries will be displayed from December 7-28, 2016, in the library’s Second Floor Art Gallery. All visitors will be able to vote for their choice in each category: Children under 13, Teen 13-17, Adults 18 and over, or Professional — earning over $5,000/year through photography. Photo entry subject matter must be astrological in nature. The contest rules are included below. Winners will be announced during a December 28 celebration at the library.

The Coloring Club is open to adults and teens, and meets on the fourth Saturday of the month. The group listens to relaxing music, holds quiet conversations, and enjoys coloring for a little more than an hour. This is great chance to get away and just be creative! While the club next meets in January, the library always has a Coloring Table available in their Teen Area with coloring pages and colored pencils for anyone wishing to make a quick stop to relax and de-stress, before joining the next club meeting on January 28, 2017.

Photo Contest Rules

Braswell Memorial Library’s Discover Space Photo Contest runs for the month of December 2016 only. By submitting an entry, each contestant agrees to the rules of the contest and states that he or she is 18 years old or older, or has included a signed parental permission form.

Entry is restricted to legal residents of the state of North Carolina. A current Library Card from a Twin-Counties Library is strongly recommended.  Entrants may choose 1 category: Professional (those earning an average of over $5,000 per year through photography), Children (up to 12 years of age), Teens (ages 13-17), and Adult (ages 18 and older). Individuals affiliated with Braswell Memorial Library, including employees, trustees, volunteers, and their immediate families (children, siblings and spouses), and others living in their households are not eligible for any prize. Braswell Memorial Library will determine winners’ eligibility in its sole discretion.

Entries must be turned in to the Information Services Desk on the second floor of the Library before close on December 5th.  Each entry should be an original framed photograph, no larger than 8X10, of an astrological nature. Subject matter may include, but is not limited to; the sun, the moon, planets, and/or the stars. Each entry must be accompanied by an official entry form with all requested information included. Each individual artist may submit up to 3 display-ready photographs, however, if the Gallery space becomes an issue, not all pieces will necessarily be included in the exhibit. Artists are encouraged to rank their submissions by priority for display. All confirmed entrants will be represented by at least 1 work. (If you have questions in filling out the entry form, please call the Information Services Desk for assistance)

Any recognizable faces within the photograph must be accompanied by a photo permission form signed by the subject(s). Each photograph must be accompanied by a title and short description of the work.

Entries must be the original work of the artist and not previously published, there is no restriction on when the photograph was taken.  Use of Photoshop or watermark is not acceptable for purposes of this contest. However, slight digital editing can be made, note of any such modifications must be included in the work’s description.

You retain your rights to your photograph; however, by entering the contest, you grant Braswell Memorial Library a royalty-free license to publicly display the work(s) in the second floor gallery during the month of December. All photographs will be returned to the artist after the Celebration on December 28th, and should be picked up by January 6th. All photographs not collected by 5:45pm on January 14, 2017, will become the property of Braswell Memorial Library, with no further restrictions on use or disposal.

All completed entries and photographs must be received in the Library by December 5, 2016,  7:45pm (Eastern Standard Time).

Winners will be determined by popular vote marked by visitors to the gallery. There is not restriction on voting other than one choice per category and only one vote per day.
