Beginning Monday, August 6, 2018, New Hanover County residents can bring unpackaged food waste in reusable containers to the county’s HazWagon. The food waste will be transported to the New Hanover County landfill for composting.

New Hanover County’s HazWagon is a mobile collection service where residents may bring household hazardous waste, electronics, and now food waste, free of charge. The HazWagon operates from 10am to 2pm:

  • Mondays — near baseball fields at Ogden Park, 615 Ogden Park Drive, Wilmington NC
  • Wednesdays — Wrightsville Beach Municipal Complex, Municipal Lane, Wrightsville Beach NC
  • Fridays — south side of Mike Chappell Park, 501 Dow Road S, Carolina Beach NC

Said Environmental Management Director Joe Suleyman:

“We believe that leveraging the HazWagon’s popularity and convenience will be a great way to increase the amount of food waste that we divert away from landfill disposal.”

The food-waste composter is at the New Hanover County Landfill, 5210 US Hwy 421 N, Wilmington NC, and residents/businesses may bring food waste to the composter during normal business hours. There is no fee.
