The Imperial Centre Theatre is accepting submissions from local playwrights — professionals and amateurs — for the second-annual Local Playwrights Staged Reading Series. The deadline to submit a full-length or one-act play is Thursday, August 15, 2019.
Playwrights in the Eastern North Carolina region may submit an original work to be read and judged by a panel of three judges. The judges will read all plays submitted, score them on a points system, and proceed with the top plays.
Last year’s series featured two evenings of readings. For 2019, the series will be expanded to three evenings. Said Brooke Edwards, the theatre’s Artistic and Managing Director:
“It is important for playwrights to hear their work out loud.”
Staged readings of the chosen works will take place at the Imperial Centre Theatre on Friday, September 13, 2019, and during the “First Friday” events on October 4 and November 1, 2019. These three events will be free to attend and open to the public.
Submissions may be made by emailing brooke.edwards@rockymountnc.gov or by mailing hard copies to:

Out of 15 submissions in 2018, the playwrights whose works were selected and performed were:
- Jim Lee — “Keeping Score”
- Lela Chesson — “Gardenia Daze”
- Marilyn Barner Anselmi — “Found Objects”
Staged readings are funded through the theatre’s production budget.
Note that Imperial Centre Theatre is also seeking local actors to participate in the Fall staged readings. Roles will vary depending on which works are selected by the committee.
