Opening Day at the Park
Saturday, April 21, 2018 @ 8am-3pm
“Play Ball!” is music to the ears for the Town of Wendell. What better way to transition into the spring season than a day of ball at Wendell Park, 601 W Third Street, Wendell NC. Kick off the baseball and softball season in Wendell at this free, public Opening Day celebration.
Enjoy “Pitch, Hit and Run” competition, a homerun derby, and inflatables. T-ball, baseball, and softball games will also be played.
For 2017, the Town of Wendell celebrated the centennial of Jake “Jakie” May entering professional baseball with the renaming of the Large Ball Field to Jake May Field. When on the mound, Jake May threw a left handed jug-handle curve ball and when at the plate he batted right-handed. In 1932, the Cubs went to the World Series against the Yankees and May struck out the Babe – twice! After 1932, May returned home to Wendell and spent the remainder of his life farming tobacco and hunting. May passed away in 1970. Jake May is in the 2018 class of inductees into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (NCSHOF). Ceremonies celebrating the 2018 inductees will be held May 3-4, 2018. Information about the ceremonies hosted by NCSHOF is available here.
In keeping with the rich Wendell tradition of America’s pastime, Wendell has the honor of being state champions 16 times within the past 15 years. Looking forward to another great season of ball.
