Thursday afternoon a Facebook photo caught my eye. It was a photo of newly-made caramel apple cupcakes for sale at Auntie Cake’s Bakery in Bunn, North Carolina (Franklin County). Friday I took a drive to Bunn to check out this new bakery and pick up a few of their delicious-looking cupcakes.
Owners Katharine and Michael Colclough were friendly and eager to talk about the shop — which has been busy. Their recent grand opening Friday, October 13, 2017 was a good day, with lines forming out the door. The day I stopped in, about 15 minutes before their 4pm closing time, the display case was almost empty, as customers had already carried away almost all of their sweet treats.
I can taste why. I picked up a chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing, an apple spice cupcake, and a berry turnover. All were tasty. While I personally lean toward chocolate cupcakes — and enjoyed the chocolate/vanilla cupcake — I was pleasantly surprised at the apple spice flavored cupcake. It was light, fluffy, moist, and flavorful, with a lightness in the icing. The turnover was flaky and light too, but I think I’m now a fan of fruity cupcakes!
Both Katharine and Michael bake the goods sold in the shop. Plus, Katharine makes custom cakes in their spacious baking kitchen. In fact, when I first arrived Katharine was preparing a multi-tier baby shower cake with baby-blue fondant.
This bakery offers cupcakes, muffins, cookies, croissants, cakes, and other goodies.
In addition to baking through the day and prepared custom-design cakes to order, Michael runs Beekeeper Inc., a commercial bee operation with bees in many fields. The many types of honey produced by the hives are for sale in Auntie Cake’s Bakery too.
Auntie Cake’s Bakery is located in the old Mi Fiesta building, 669 Main Street, Bunn NC. Baked goods change from day-to-day. Follow their Facebook — www.facebook.com/auntiecakesbakerync — to see updates, or call 919.340.8816 to find out what’s baking — or order a custom cake. The bakery’s website is auntiecakesbakerync.com.
The bakery motto is “Love Made Edible” — stop by for cupcakes, cookies, turnovers, or other treats and decide for yourself.
Plus, if you skip the grocery-chain bakery and go to this made-right-there bakery, you’re “shopping local” and supporting this local-family run shop. Win-win!
