Three years ago, Lieutenant Justin Guthrie recognized a community need during his time out working in the Knightdale NC Community, and decided to do something about it. Lt. Guthrie reached out to the community partners Knightdale Police had access to and asked for donations to assist in the first annual Shop With A Cop.
This year, the donations of money and items have allowed the Knightdale Police Department to host 12 children, identified by staff and teachers at local Knightdale schools, and provide them with a $200 budget to purchase toys for themselves. Lt. Guthrie said “The Staff of local Knightdale schools know their kids better than anyone, and they are able to identify kids who may have had something happen in their life that keeps them from having a happy Christmas this year.” They get their own Knightdale Police Officer to shop with them now.
“Greystone Apartments in Knightdale, managed by Lincoln Properties, has a line item in their budget every year, specifically to donate $1,500 to Shop With A Cop.” Lt. Guthrie says. Other financial contributions came from Target in Knightdale, Hope Community Church in Raleigh, and the Knightdale Police Department. Lowes Foods of Knightdale donated a refrigerator for the Knightdale Police to raffle and use the raffle proceeds for Shop With A Cop as well.
The first night of Knightdale Shop With A Cop happened December 6, 2016, with the second event coming up December 7, 2016, at 6pm at the Target in Knightdale.
