On July 23, 2021, Rocky Mount, North Carolina City Manager Rochelle Small-Toney announced the appointment of Jessie Nunery as Interim Communications, Marketing and Public Relations Director. Nunery has served as the city’s Media Relations Specialist since June 2018. Nunery’s appointment is effective Monday, July 26, 2021.
“Over the years, I have seen Jessie evolve in the department, and I think he is prepared to take on some of the additional responsibilities this role will entail,” Small-Toney said.
Nunery has been responsible for media relations, press releases and social media outlets. He also serves as the host for the weekly City Beat episodes, which are broadcast on the city’s YouTube page. The episodes double as the city’s first podcast, which launched in March 2021 and are available on most streaming platforms. Nunery serves as the moderator for the ongoing #RockyMount4All Virtual Town Hall series. Nunery is a member of the Public Information Officer Steering Committee as well as the Employee Appreciation and Juneteenth Empowerment Festival Planning Committees.
Prior to joining the city of Rocky Mount, Nunery had 15 years of experience as a journalist. He holds Bachelor’s degrees in English and Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Nunery is also in the process of finalizing his Master’s of Public Administration from East Carolina University.
