On August 25, 2021, at approximately 7:20am, the Rocky Mount Police Department received a call from a citizen who located a bone at 480 Lee Street (Best Friends Dog Park) in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

The Rocky Mount Police Department Evidence Unit collected the bone and partnered with the State Bureau of Investigation and a Forensic Anthropologist from East Carolina University. A preliminary investigation determined that the bone was human.

According to the Anthropologist, due to the extensive weathering of the human bone, it is historical, which means it is estimated to be close to one hundred years old. The Rocky Mount Police Department will continue to investigate the situation.
