Cheese Spread, Slices, and Shreds Recalled for Listeria

Since February 1, 2017, multiple cheese recalls cautioned customers on possible Listeria contamination. These included a popular pimento spread, deli sliced cheese, and shredded cheese. As of February 11, multiple brands were affected by this potential contamination.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA):

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Recalls from each cheese brand are included below. Contact information for customers who have purchased these products may be found with each recall.

Sargento Products

As of February 11, 2017, Sargento Foods Inc. is closely monitoring and gathering information prompted by a recall by Deutsch Kase Haus, LLC. The supplier, based in Middlebury, Indiana, notified Sargento Foods Inc. that a specialty Longhorn Colby cheese it supplied to Sargento must be recalled due to a potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes. There are no confirmed illnesses.

On February 10, 2017, Meijer announced a recall of its Meijer Brand Colby Cheese and Colby Jack Cheese sold exclusively through its deli counters due to a potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The Meijer Brand Colby Cheese and Colby Jack Cheese were sold in Meijer stores from Nov. 10, 2016 to Feb. 9, 2017. There have been no known illnesses reported to Meijer from the product affected by this recall.

Meijer received notice of a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination from MDS Foods, a Meijer supplier that sources the Meijer branded cheeses from Deutsch Kase Haus, a cheese manufacturer based in Middlebury, Indiana. MDS Foods informed Meijer that evidence of potential Listeria monocytogenescontamination had been identified by the manufacturer.

The recalled product will be in plastic deli packaging with printed labels that have the UPCs 215927xxxxxx or 215938xxxxxx – the last 6 digits will vary, and are determined by weight since the product was purchased at the deli counter.

Customers should stop using the product and either dispose of it or return it to the customer service desk at any Meijer store for a full refund. For additional information, please contact Meijer at 800.543.3704, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Notice issued February 9, 2017: Routine testing by the Consumer and Industry Services Division of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture has discovered Listeria monocytogenes in a sample of Amish Classic Colby deli horn cheese.

The manufacturer, Deutsch Kase Haus, LLC, is instructing all wholesalers and retailers to discontinue selling their existing stock of Amish Classic Colby deli horns distributed by MDS Foods under the Amish Classic label with item number 55209 and sold as sliced deli cheese. They are also recalling lot numbers 110316V02, 110316V03 and 110316V04.

The company is also removing packaged Amish Classic Colby Cheese with item numbers 55241 and 55245 which were cut from the suspect 55209 product and wrapped at the MDS Foods manufacturing facility located in Tullahoma, Tenn.

Meijer’s Colby-jack deli horn lot number 110316V08 and Meijer’s Colby deli horn lot numbers 110316V08 are also part of the recall.

On January 30, TDA took a sample of the Amish Classic Colby from a store in Trenton, Tenn. Tests conducted in the state lab confirmed the food was contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating the source and extent of the contamination and determining how many retailers received these batches of cheese. TDA is urging anyone who purchased any of the aforementioned items not to consume them.

No illnesses have been reported in Tennessee. The investigation is ongoing.

Listeria monocytogenes is unlike many other germs because it can grow in a cold environment. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women and may be fatal for individuals with weakened immune systems. Cooking and pasteurization are two methods to eliminate the bacteria from food.

On February 11, 2017, MDS Foods Inc., of Massillon, OH recalled multiple products some of which were found to be contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes and other products which may have the potential to be contaminated with the bacteria.

Deutsch Kase Haus, LLC of Middlebury, Indiana, supplied MDS Foods with Colby and Colby Jack minihorn cheeses that have been found to be contaminated with the pathogenic organism. At the time of this release, no illnesses have been reported.

On February 9, 2017, Ruth’s Salads Charlotte, NC expanded the recall of Ruth’s Salads Pimento Cheese Spreads packed in Chester, South Carolina. The products involved include: Ruth’s Original Pimento Spread 7oz; Ruth’s Original Pimento Spread 12 oz.; Ruth’s Original Pimento Spread 24 oz.; Ruth’s Old Fashion Pimento Spread 16 oz.; Ruth’s Jalapeno Pimento Spread 12 oz.; Ruth’s Lite Pimento Spread 12 oz.; and Ruth’s Cream Cheese with Pineapple-Pecans 12 oz. All lot numbers are included in this recall.  The products are packed in plastic containers and labeled as “Packed by B&H Foods, Inc., Chester, SC”.  The products have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes.

B&H Foods of Charlotte has expanded its recall of Ruth’s pimento spreads to include more products that were packed at the Chester, SC plant. The products were distributed at retail supermarkets in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee.

The company launched the initial recall on February 2, 2017, after a routine sample collected at a retail location by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, which may cause life-threatening illness. No illnesses have been reported to date. The company elected to expand the recall as a precaution on Febuary 9, 2017.

Consumers who have purchased these productsare urged to return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund. All lots and sell-by dates for products labeled as “Packed by B&H Foods, Inc., Chester, SC” are being recalled. Products labeled as packed in Charlotte are not included in this recall.

Le Fedou, Fromagerie De Hyelzas Sas Recalls “Tomme Brebis Fedou Cheese” and “Soureliette Cheese”

On February 1, 2017, Fromi USA. of New York, New York, recalled 7 cases of Soureliette cheese and 2 cases of Tomme Brebis Fedou because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled Tomme Brebis Fedou cheese and Soureliette were distributed to CA, NY and MA through retail stores.

The product Soureliette comes in a 3lb box marked with an expiration date of 02/22/2017; 01/25/2017 and 08/02/2017 stamped on the top.

The product Tomme Brebis Fedou comes in a 3lb box marked with an expiration date of 02/22/2017 stamped on the top.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the foreign supplier revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in 3lb packages of Tomme Brebis Fedou cheese and Soureliette.

Country Fresh Recalls Various Cooking And Snacking Products

Following the Sargento Cheese Company recall where select Sargento branded cheeses were recalled due to the potential of being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, Country Fresh, LLC. of Conroe, Texas, is recalling 2,552 cases of various cooking and snacking products (product descriptions attached), that contained Sargento branded cheeses because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The product in question was shipped to retailers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia under the Country Fresh and store brand labels described in the product listing.

The list of products subject to this recall follows:

The product bears “BEST IF USED BY” dates between January 19, 2017 (1/19/17) through February 17, 2017 (2/17/17). No products except those on this list are subject to this recall.

To date, no illnesses have been confirmed by public health authorities.

Choice Farms LLC Recalls Very Limited Quantity of Mushrooms Stuffed with Cheese

Choice Farms LLC is initiating a very limited voluntary recall of stuffed mushrooms because the mushrooms may contain a cheese component which a third party supplier advised has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall pertains to a  total of seven (six in Texas, one in Kansas) individual shrink-wrapped trays of one of three stuffed mushroom types: Traditional Gourmet Portabella Mushrooms; Pizza Style Portabella Mushrooms; and/or Stuffed Mushrooms sold on Friday, February 10, 2017 at the following stores:

On February 16, 2017: Biery Cheese Co. is voluntarily recalling specialty Longhorn Colby cheese due to potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes.

On 02-15-17 the firm was notified by Deutsch Kase Haus, LLC of Middlebury, IN that they supplied Biery Cheese with various type cheeses that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.  No illnesses have been reported to date.

The products were distributed between November 11, 2016 and January 4, 2017.  These products were packaged at Biery Cheese Company in Louisville, OH and distributed to distribution centers located in the States of: Georgia, Indiana, and Pennsylvania.

Saputo Inc. Recalls Certain Gouda Cheese Products

On February 16, 2017: Saputo Inc. (Saputo), is voluntarily recalling certain Gouda cheese products in the United States after having been notified by Deutsch Kase Haus, LLC of Middlebury, Indiana that some specialty Gouda cheese products that it supplied to Saputo’s Green Bay, Wisconsin facility may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The affected retail products are the Great Midwest® Applewood Smoked Gouda cheeses listed in the table below. As a precautionary measure, Saputo is also recalling the Dutchmark® Smoked Gouda cheeses listed in the table below, which were packaged on the same line. Consumers should not consume the recalled products.

No illnesses due to consumption of these products have been reported. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

The recalled products were sold to retailers nationwide. The Great Midwest Applewood® Smoked Gouda cheeses were sold primarily in retail stores at deli counters and deli cases. Saputo is working with impacted customers to ensure that the recalled products are removed from the marketplace. Dutch Valley Food Distributors, Schlabach Branch Announces a Voluntary Nationwide Recall of Assorted Cheese Items

February 17, 2017, Dutch Valley Food Distributors, Schlabach branch is issuing a recall on various Cheeses and cheese containing items due to the potential for it to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

On 2/15/2017 the firm was notified by their supplier, Deutsch Kase Haus, that various cheese product they received may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. There have been no illnesses or issues reported regarding consumption of this product to date.

Dutch Valley Food Distributors, Schlabach Branch has issued a voluntary recall for the following products:

All Items packaged and sold within the parameters mentioned are subject to this recall, including items sold on our website, www.dutchvalleyfoods.com. These items were distributed to the following states: AR, FL, GA, IA, IN, KS, KY, MD, MN, MO, NC, NE, NY, OH, PA, SC, TN, VA, VT, WI, & WV.

This recall is being made with the knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration.

Retailers are advised to remove this product from store shelves based on the listed codes. Lakeview Cheese and Bashas’ Family of Stores Issue Voluntary Cheese Recall

On February 24, 2017, out of an abundance of caution and with an emphasis on customers’ wellness and safety, Lakeview Cheese and Bashas’ Family of Stores are proactively recalling various types of Colby cheese due to a potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes. It’s important to note that no illnesses have been reported to date.

The affected products were manufactured by Guggisberg Cheese, Inc. and by Deutsch Kase Haus, LLC of Middlebury, Indiana. The affected products were distributed by Las Vegas-based Lakeview Cheese to Bashas’ Family of Stores, and sold in Bashas’ and Food City supermarkets’ Arizona meat departments under the grocery brands’ private label.

The recall consists of nine Colby cheese products, including fixed-weight and bulk- cut, random-weight items. The products being voluntarily recalled are:

Lipari Foods Issues Voluntary Recall of Various Bulk and Retail Cheese Products

On February 28, 2017, Lipari Foods, LLC issued a voluntary recall of various bulk and retail cheeses manufactured by Deutsch Kase Haus due to potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The products were distributed to food service and retail stores throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

This was brought to our attention by Deutsch Kase Haus in response to their recent recall due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes that originated from the supplier’s facility. As a precaution, Lipari Foods products are being recalled as they have the potential to be contaminated due to the fact that they were manufactured by Deutsch Kase Haus. We are working closely with Deutsch Kase Haus and the FDA to understand the cause of the situation and ensure that all affected product has been pulled from commerce.

Yoke’s Fresh Market Issues Voluntary Cheese Recall

On February 28, 2017, out of an abundance of caution and with an emphasis on customers’ wellness and safety, Yoke’s Fresh Market is proactively recalling two types of Colby cheese due to a potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes.

The affected products were manufactured by Guggisberg Cheese, Inc. and by Deutsch Kase Haus, LLC of Middlebury, Indiana. The affected products were sold in Yoke’s Fresh Market stores in WA and ID under the grocery brand’s private label.

The recall consists of two Colby cheese products. The products being voluntarily recalled are:

Colby Jk Longhorn Cheese – Yoke’s Fresh Market 16 oz.
Colby Longhorn Cheese – Yoke’s Fresh Market 16 oz.

Meijer Expands Recall To Include Meijer Artisan Made Natural Muenster Cheese And Pre-Made Ham Sub Sandwich Due To Possible Health Risk

Meijer expanded its list of recalled items to now include its Meijer brand Artisan Made Natural Muenster Cheese and its pre-wrapped Ham Sub on Artisan White Baguette due to a potential cross contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The affected Meijer brand Artisan Made Natural Muenster Cheese was located on “cheese islands” within the Retailer’s Deli section and has the expiration dates of Mar. 28, 2017, May 13, 2107, and June 10, 2017.  The Meijer pre-made Ham Sub on Artisan White Baguette was located in its “grab-and-go” fresh deli cases with sell by dates between Nov. 2, 2016 and Dec. 30, 2016. There have been no known illnesses reported to Meijer associated with these products.

Meijer received notice of a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination from MDS Foods, a Meijer supplier. MDS Foods informed Meijer that evidence of potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination had been identified due to possible cross contamination after being processed on the same line as previous recalled cheese, announced on February 10.

The Meijer brand Artisan Made Natural Muenster Cheese will have the UPC 8-86926 27573-5. The Meijer deli-made Ham Sub on Artisan White Baguette has the UPC Code 7-13733 76499-5.
