A veteran civil rights activist and congressman of Maryland’s 7th District, Rep. Cummings passed away early Thursday morning (October 17, 2019) at the age of 68.

Flags are to remain at half-staff through Sunset on Friday, October 18, 2019.

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Rep. Cummings served as Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus and was the first African American in history to be named Speaker Pro Tempore of Maryland.

In his honor, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper released the following statement.

“Elijah Cummings lived a life that valued truth and honor. His revered voice will be sorely missed.”

As a sign of respect, individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are welcome to fly the flag at half-staff for the same duration of time.
