Smithfield’s 32nd annual Ham and Yam Festival is scheduled for May 7, 2016, in Downtown Smithfield NC. The event includes a cook-off, pig and rubber duck races, entertainment, kids’ play area, vendors, and ham and yam foods.

A concert by headliner James Wesley is scheduled for 8pm, but that’s not all! There will be entertainment on three stages, with dancers and local bands, throughout the festival.

Visit and shop at the vendor booths for crafts and more. Food vendors will be offering a variety of items — including many featuring country ham and sweet potatoes.

According to the Smithfield website:

The Ham & Yam Festival began in 1985 as a challenge from Johnston County ham producers to the ham producers of Smithfield, Virginia. As Johnston County is the #1 producer of sweet potatoes in the United States, it is fitting for the festival to honor the agricultural heritage of the area.

The festival now features a barbecue cook-off attracting great cooks from throughout the area to compete for cash prizes.

A schedule for the festival and related activities is online.
