Carmike 10-Wilson Movie Review of the Issue: The Avengers

By Kay Whatley, Editor

The movie review feature continues this issue with review of The Avengers. Thank you to Carmike 10 on Ward Blvd. in Wilson for welcoming us in for our review.

We went together; a family made up of an over-50, 40-something, a teen, a tween, two males, two females, all with different experiences and ideas of what makes a good movie. The short version is: we all loved The Avengers.

To give a little background, the Avengers are a group of Marvel Comics superheroes, brought together to fight evil using their varied superpowers. In the movie, the group — working together as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division) — includes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor, the Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Director Nick Fury. Frequent movie-goers may recognize some of these characters from movies released in the past few years.

Having seen several of the previous “Avengers” movies, including Iron Man and Thor, we all had an idea what to expect. The Avengers exceeded our expectation!

This movie was funny, exciting, and kept us guessing through to the end! The interactions between the characters, especially the banter between Iron Man, Captain America, and David Banner (the Hulk), were sarcastic and snide and made us laugh out loud at many points.

There was plenty of action and suspense throughout, following the initial character introduction scenes. Unlike many recently released movies, the action was easier to follow. And the humor between the characters continued to sneak in even during the serious action parts.

We watched the 3D version of the movie, and I have to say it is the best quality 3D I’ve seen. The days of red-and-blue 3D glasses are long gone. The action jumps out of the screen with a flow and dimension that seems more natural than previous 3D movies we’ve seen. I’d recommend spending the extra few bucks and wearing the glasses to get the full experience of this action movie.

All four of us agreed it was a great movie and were glad that we had taken the evening together to enjoy it!
