The Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation Department is hosting two after-hours programs that focus on fitness. Pilates and Yoga are now being held in the Imperial Centre’s Maria V. Howard Arts Center.

According to Alicyn Wiedrich, art curator at the center, staff has hosted yoga previously. Its instant popularity has led to its ongoing success. Pilates is a new endeavor. Says Wiedrich:

“Pilates will make you sweat. It focuses on core, arms and legs, as well as strengthening, toning and balance.”

Yoga requires more meditation, but also encourages balance and flexibility. Wiedrich says yoga was one of the primary reasons why the arts center galleries were chosen as a location for the dual fitness programs. Notes Wiedrich:

“When practicing yoga, you’re often tasked with balancing, and it really helps to have something to look at and focus on. What better place to pick a spot on the wall to focus on than at an art gallery!”

The public is invited to Yoga in the Galleries every Thursday from 5:30-6:30pm.

Pilates in the Galleries is currently being offered every Tuesday from 5:30-6:30pm.

Each class is $5 per person. Both Yoga and Pilates are led by Amy Skaggs, a certified instructor.
