Eastern North Carolina Veterans Day Events Planned

Multiple events in Eastern North Carolina will honor veterans and their service to the US. While some services have already been held this past weekend, these events are coming up on Veterans Day or the weekend following.

Veterans Day in Historic Downtown Wilson

The Wilson Committee on Patriotism will hold its annual Veterans Day service at 11am on Friday, November 11, 2016, in front of the Wilson County Courthouse, 115 Nash Street SE, Wilson NC.

If it rains, the ceremony continues at an alternate location inside the American legion Post 13, 2035 US Hwy 301 S, Wilson NC.

The program will include patriotic music, displays by student ROTC groups, speeches and prayers.

Veterans Day is a City of Wilson holiday; all offices and recreational facilities will be closed. All garbage and recycling routes will be on schedule; but, there will be no special garbage pickups on November 11.

Veterans Day Tribute in Knightdale

Two Green Thumbs Garden Club invites all to come and pay tribute to our Veterans at this tenth annual event. “We live in the land of the free Only because of the brave.”

The tribute takes place November 13, 2016, 12:30pm, at the Blue Star Memorial in downtown Knightdale NC.

Saluting Our Veterans at the Dunn Center

Also planned for November 11, 2016,  7:30-10pm, join the Tar River Orchestra and Chorus along with special veteran guest speakers to honor the commitment and service of the many brave and selfless men and women of the armed forces.

This stirring evening of tribute will feature an original anthem by composer John Williams, music from the HBO series “Band of Brothers”, Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait” with celebrity narrator, as well as familiar patriotic selections.

Come to North Carolina Wesleyan College’s Dunn Center for the Performing Arts, located at 3400 N Wesleyan Blvd, in Rocky Mount NC, and share your gratitude as we celebrate our veterans.

Children 18 and under and college students with ID get in free.

Veterans’ Day Parade in Goldsboro

On Veterans Day, November 11, 2016, 11am-1pm, a parade honoring their service will move through Historic Downtown Goldsboro NC. This parade is hosted by the Wayne County Veteran’s Association.

7th Annual POW/MIA Ceremony and Flag Retirement Ceremony

On November 11, 2016, at 5pm, the Airborne & Special Operations Museum Foundation will host a POW/MIA Ceremony, offering the community a chance to honor and recognize missing Americans and their families.

Rolling Thunder North Carolina Chapter 1 will perform the Missing Man Table Ceremony.

A Flag Retirement Ceremony will begin immediately after and the community is encouraged to bring flags that are ready to retire. This ceremony takes place in the Sunken Garden on the Hay Street side of the museum. The museum address is 100 Bragg Blvd., Fayetteville NC. The museum is online at www.asomf.org.

Veterans Day Sunset Ceremony in Wake Forest

Come out to honor our veterans in this Veterans Day Sunset Ceremony. The Colors will be posted by the Wake Forest High School Army JROTC Color Guard, a guest speaker will talk about flag etiquette, and participants of the “Why Veterans are Special” writing contest will be reading their essays!

Join the event at Centennial Plaza in front of Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks Street, Wake Forest NC. The event is November 11, 2016, starting at 5pm.

Stay afterwards to enjoy Art After Hours in Downtown Wake Forest.

Veterans Day Ceremony in Spring Lake

Veterans Day Ceremony is being held on November 11, 2016, 10-11am, at Veterans Park, located at Ruth and Main Streets in Spring Lake NC.

Veterans Day Ceremony in Hope Mills

The Town of Hope Mills honors the men and women who have served our country in the military at this annual ceremony, hosted by the VFW and Women’s Auxiliary. The event will start at the Veterans Memorial with a laying-of-the-wreaths ceremony. Afterward, attendees are invited into the Hope Mills Recreation Center building for refreshments. In case of inclement weather, the entire ceremony will be held inside the Recreation Center.

Veterans Day Movie Showing in Roxboro

The Person County Public Library will be showing two movies on Saturday, November 12, 2016, 1:30-3:30pm at 319 S Main Street, in Roxboro NC.

Join in watching these two documentaries:

  • The Americans on D-Day (44 min) — Battlefield historian Ellwood von Seibold recreates D-Day with on-location footage and interviews.
  • Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq (56 min) — Veterans who have experienced traumatic injuries tell their stories. Graphic content, best for mature viewers.

Veterans Day Breakfast and Celebration in Orange County

Veterans Day 2016 starts with a breakfast hosted by The Orange County Department on Aging. Veterans are invited to a free breakfast hosted in their honor on November 11, 2016, 8:30-10:30am. Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Danny W. Hassell, US Army, will be the guest speaker. The breakfast will take place at the Passmore Center, 103 Meadowlands Drive in Hillsborough NC.

The breakfast is followed by the Orange County Veterans Memorial Site Dedication at 11am at the memorial site — 2501 Homestead Road, Chapel Hill NC. Some transportation is available.

Additional Veterans Day Offerings

Veterans, reservists, retired and active military personnel are our American heroes, so Chimney Rock Park is honoring service by offering a “Veterans Day Special Weekend” with a free visit to Chimney Rock State Park during the dates of November 9-13, 2016. To be given free entry, you must present military ID or proof of service. Hours are 8:30am to 5pm. See the Chimney Rock Park website for more details or call 828.625.9611.
