The German grocery store chain, Lidl, opened stores across North Carolina this year. Once of the stores is located in Wilson NC along Raleigh Road Parkway. The store is designed to be a bring-your-own-box, low overhead grocery.

What you’ll find inside the store is a little bit different than the average grocery. Items are boxed, rather than stocked directly on the shelves. There is the “Surprises” aisle with a wide range of items from sneakers and clothing to kitchy household items.

The company website describes their stores as: “High quality. Low prices. Hassle-free shopping that gets you in and out.”

Shopping in this different store environment is interesting. Each shopper will need to see for themselves if the items they buy are available and priced to fit their budget, or if they prefer Aldi, Harris Teeter, or other stores in the area.

As seen in the photos below, prices on some items are much lower than those usually seen at other grocery chains. By picking and choosing, it may be possible to save quite a bit on the weekly food bill.  For example, at our house we go through gallons of milk each week. With the Lidl price of $1.45 a gallon, about half of that at other stores, we can save a bit each week — as long as that low price lasts.  Having only been to Lidl a few times at this point, it is unknown if that gallon price is all the time or a special.

Choose wisely, and save for yourself.

At the very least, Lidl Wilson is an open-floorplan, wide aisles, clean, inviting place to shop.

In addition to the Wilson store, Lidl opened stores in 2017, many in mid-June across NC:

  • Greenville
  • Havelock
  • Kinston
  • Rockingham
  • Rocky Mount
  • Sanford
  • Thomasville
  • Wake Forest
  • Winston-Salem

New stores are set to open in Morehead City NC on September 7, 2017, Shelby NC on September 21, and Gastonia NC on September 28.
