On Tuesday, March 5, 2019, the Council of State approved a move from Raleigh to Rocky Mount for the office of the North Carolina State Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The relocation will place the new NC DMV headquarters in the six-story former Hardee’s Food Systems building located on North Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC.

The Rocky Mount City Council welcomes the significant move. Said Rocky Mount Councilmember Reuben Blackwell:

“We keep the city moving forward with positive projects like these, projects that build momentum. To my knowledge, we have never had a state office headquartered in Rocky Mount.”

Blackwell thanked all members of the Rocky Mount City Council, Governor Roy Cooper, the state’s representatives, and many others pivotal in the deal, scheduled to take effect at the start of January 2020.

Stated Blackwell:

“There were a number of people who played an important role in bringing the DMV to Rocky Mount. The Rocky Mount City Council and so many other organizations and individuals are working to invest in major projects that will keep this city moving forward.”

Mayor David Combs says the new move is exciting and that people who will soon work in Rocky Mount will find the city has a lot to offer.

The announcement of the relocation of the DMV to Rocky Mount comes on the heels of another major announcement, the council’s recent signing of a letter of intent for the consideration of a $60-70 million development in downtown Rocky Mount. David Hunt of Hunt Services noted that the proposed project would include multiple layers, such as two well-lit and well-maintained parking garages, a 107-room branded hotel, and condos.
