Multiple product recalls have been issued since the start of May for sunflower seeds and products containing the seeds. Since the sunflower seeds had been shipped to other companies for use in their prepared products, recalls have been issued by several food preparers. Those releases to date are included below, with more information available from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

SunOpta Recall of Certain Sunflower Kernel Products

SunOpta is voluntarily recalling a limited number of sunflower kernel products that have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes , an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The products were produced at SunOpta’s Crookston, Minn. facility between the dates of February 1, 2016 and February 19, 2016. No illnesses have been reported to date, but in an abundance of caution SunOpta is recalling the products.

Recalled retail items were sold in clear printed plastic packages and are marked with Best By Dates located on the front or back of the packages. Listed below are details regarding the recalled items:

Recalled products were distributed to distribution centers between February 22, 2016 and February 25, 2016 in Illinois and North Dakota, and may be redistributed to other states nationwide.

Consumers are urged not to consume these products. Consumers who purchased these products may take them back to the store where they purchased them for a refund or simply discard them. Retailers and wholesale customers should check their inventories and shelves to confirm that none of the products are present or available for purchase by consumers or in warehouse inventories. Please contact SunOpta at contactus@sunopta.com to arrange for disposal or return of the product.

This recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Company provided the following statement:

“The quality and safety of the food we produce and the ingredients we provide are the highest priority for us. Therefore, we are voluntarily recalling a limited number of sunflower kernel products that have the potential to be contaminated withListeria monocytogenes . We have isolated the production window to a short timeframe and are working with the FDA and customers to control and dispose of affected product. We are aware of one customer complaint that did not involve an illness, and we are not aware of any consumer issues due to consumption of this product.”

Creative Snacks Co. Issues Recall on Sunflower Seeds and Trail Mixes Including Sunflower Seeds

Creative Snacks Co. of Greensboro, North Carolina is recalling specific lot codes of bulk and packaged sunflower seed products due to the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes. We have been notified by SunOpta, our sunflower seed supplier, that the company has issued a voluntary recall for sunflower seeds that were processed in their Crookston, Minnesota facility between February 1, 2016 and February 19, 2016. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. It is worth noting that no illnesses have been reported to date and that the recall is a precautionary measure.

Creative Snacks is recalling all products that contain the SunOpta sunflower seeds in question. The product being recalled has been distributed to retailers nationwide and is being sold in a variety of formats including plastic rigid containers, small re-sealable bags and in bulk.

Consumers who have purchased affected Creative Snacks Co. products with the Best Before dates listed above should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Wheatberry Salad

Publix Super Markets Inc. is issuing a voluntary recall for Wheatberry Salad. The product is available in plastic containers available in the Publix Delis. The sunflower kernels used in the salad are involved with the larger nationwide recall due toListeria monocytogenes.

The Wheatberry Salad was available in all Publix retail locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Consumption of products containing Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

“While the product is no longer available on store shelves, we have issued a voluntary recall because of our commitment to food safety and to advise our customers who may still have this product at home,” said Maria Brous, Publix media and community relations director. “No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the Wheatberry Salad. Consumers who have purchased the products in question may return the product to their local store for a full refund. Brown & Haley Issues Voluntary Recall of Mountain Thins “Trail Mix” Flavor

Brown & Haley of Tacoma, Washington is taking the precautionary measure of voluntarily recalling certain lots of Mountain Thins “Trail Mix” flavor that may be impacted by sunflower seeds contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

No illnesses have been reported to date. No other types, varieties or flavors of Brown & Haley or Mountain products are impacted by this recall. Brown & Haley is committed to the health and wellness of each and every consumer, and is taking this action in an abundance of caution.

Brown & Haley was notified by our supplier of sunflower seeds of the possibility that some sunflower seeds provided to Brown & Haley may be contaminated withListeria monocytogenes.

Mountain Thins “Trail Mix” flavor was distributed to select retail stores nationwide. Lots being recalled were distributed between March 7, 2016 and April 25, 2016, and are listed below.

The Kroger Co. said today it is recalling Kroger Sunflower Salad Toppers, Kroger Sunflower Kernels, and Kroger Cranberry Delight Trail Mix because a supplier indicated sunflower kernels may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which could result in severe illness to those individuals who may consume these products. No customer illnesses have been reported to date.

Kroger Supplier Expands Sunflower Products Recall

The Kroger Co. on May 21, 2016, announced it has expanded a recall of several products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes following supplier SunOpta’s expansion of its voluntary recall this week.

Earlier this month, SunOpta indicated its sunflower kernels may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which could result in severe illness to those individuals who may consume these products.  No customer illnesses have been reported to date.

Kroger has removed the following items from store shelves and initiated its customer recall notification system that alerts customers who may have purchased recalled Class 1 products through register receipt tape messages and phone calls.

Market District Voluntarily Recalls Bulk Sunflower Seeds

Giant Eagle supplier SunOpta has informed the company that sunflower seeds sold in the bulk section of its Carmel Market District have been voluntarily recalled due to possible Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria) contamination.

The affected product was sold in the bulk foods sections of the Carmel Market District with a PLU of 65167. It was available for purchase both loose within the bulk bin between February 15, 2016 and May 3, 2016, and in pre-packaged containers with sell by dates of August 1, 2016 through August 19, 2016.  There are no reported illnesses to date associated with this recall.

TreeHouse yesterday announced the voluntary recall of products that may be impacted by sunflower seeds contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes (L.mono).

L.mono is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Product was distributed nationwide through retail stores. No illnesses have been reported to date. However, TreeHouse is initiating the voluntary recall in an abundance of caution to protect public health.

Publix Recalls Cranberry Nut And Seed Mix Due To Possible Health Risk

Publix Super Markets is issuing a voluntary recall for cranberry nut and seed mix because it may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes. Publix received notification of the potential contamination from the walnut supplier, Woodstock Farms, after routine testing was completed. The 7.05 ounce plastic containers of prepackaged cranberry nut and seed mix were sold at Publix retail produce departments in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and North Carolina with a UPC of 41415-34986 and with use by dates August 7, 2016 through August 30, 2016.

Consumption of products containing Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Vending Nut Company is voluntarily recalling a limited number of sunflower kernel products that have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeriainfection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The products were packaged and sold at Vending Nut Company’s Ft. Worth, TX facility between the dates of February 24, 2016 and March 9.

Recalled retail items were sold in clear printed plastic packages and are marked with pack dates located on the front packages. Listed below are details regarding the recalled items:

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall was initiated after Vending Nut Co. was notified by our supplier that the sunflower kernels used were recalled due to possible contamination of Listeria monocytogenes.

The Quaker Oats Company Quinoa Granola Bars

The Quaker Oats Company, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, Inc., today announced a voluntary recall of a small quantity of Quaker Quinoa Granola Bars after an ingredient supplier was found to have distributed sunflower kernels that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes (L.mono). There have been no reported illnesses to date. However, Quaker is initiating the voluntary recall in an abundance of caution to protect public health.

Listeria monocytogenes (L.mono) is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

While the vast majority of potentially affected Quaker products were withheld from ever reaching retail shelves, the products being recalled were distributed nationwide and are as follows:

• 6.1 ounce boxes of Quaker Quinoa Granola Bars Chocolate Nut Medley with UPC code 30000 32241 and Best Before Dates of: 10/16/2016, 10/17/2016
• 6.1 ounce boxes of Quaker Quinoa Granola Bars Yogurt, Fruit & Nut with UPC 30000 32243 and Best

Before Dates of: 10/10/2016, 10/11/2016

At this time there are no other Quaker products involved in this situation. The company is working closely with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to further investigate this issue, but in the meantime is taking these actions out of commitment to and concern for consumers.

Expanded SunOpta Recall

As a precaution, SunOpta expanded its voluntary recall of a limited number of sunflower kernel products that have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. The initial recall was limited to sunflower kernel products produced at SunOpta’s Crookston, Minn. facility between the dates of February 1, 2016 and February 19, 2016.  The expanded recall includes products produced February 20, 2016 through April 21, 2016, the date on which the facility ceased production of the products.  No illnesses have been confirmed related to the consumption of this product.

Recalled retail items were sold in clear printed plastic packages and are marked with Best By Dates located on the front or back of the packages. Listed below are details regarding the recalled items:

Recalled products were distributed to distribution centers during the months of March and April 2016 in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas and may be redistributed to other states nationwide.

Consumers are urged not to consume these products. Consumers who purchased these products may take them back to the store where they purchased them for a refund or simply discard them. Dakota Style Foods, Inc. of Clark, South Dakota has expanded its voluntary recall to include 15,158 cases of sunflower kernels because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The sunflower kernels were distributed to 34 customers nation-wide and are sold through retail outlets.

The products involved are Dakota Style 16 ounce Roasted and Salted Sunflower Kernels, 3.5 ounce Roasted and Salted Sunflower Kernels, 32 ounce Roasted and Salted Sunflower Kernels, 4 ounce Savory Bacon Sunflower Kernels, 8 ounce Savory Bacon Sunflower Kernels and 4 ounce Salted Caramel Sunflower Kernels that were shipped by Dakota Style Foods, Inc. between February 15, 2016 and May 17, 2016. The affected lots are identified by lot codes 8B6M02, 8B6M09, 8B6M17, 8B6M18, 8B6M24, 8B6M25, 8C6M02, 8C6M08, 8C6M10, 8C6M28, 8C6M31 and 8D6M01. The consumer packages are plastic packages bearing the company logo and product name with the lot code located on the back right hand panel of the consumer package.

No illnesses have been confirmed to date. The expanded recall resulted from notice by SunOpta, one of Dakota Style’s sunflower kernel suppliers, that SunOpta expanded a voluntary recall of certain lots of sunflower kernels. Dakota Style has identified the lots that may have included ingredients received from SunOpta and is actively working to return all affected products.
